GIF to Live Photo converter

Turn a GIF into a Live Photo that moves on your iPhone lock screen. Convert and trim it here for free — the GIF never leaves your device.

Processed in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

How to turn a GIF into a Live Photo

  1. Save the GIF to your device. In Safari or a messaging app, press and hold the GIF and choose Save to Photos or Save to Files.
  2. Load it into the converter. Choose the GIF above. It’s turned into a short video on your device so you can trim it.
  3. Trim and pick a cover frame. Choose up to 3 seconds and the frame that shows when the Live Photo is still.
  4. Create the clip. Tap “Create clip” to make a lock-screen-sized video from the GIF.
  5. Save it as a Live Photo. Open the clip in AliveShot to save it to Photos as a Live Photo.

Why a GIF can’t be a wallpaper as-is

The iPhone lock screen only animates Live Photos. A GIF is a different format — an image file with many frames and no sound — so iOS shows it as a still. Converting it gives iOS what it expects: a still image paired with a short video.

This page does the conversion and trimming in your browser. Saving the result as a Live Photo needs an app, because iOS doesn’t let websites add Live Photos to Photos. AliveShot handles that step, and it can also take the GIF directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can you convert a GIF to a Live Photo?

Yes. The GIF becomes a short video, which is then saved as a Live Photo. Because GIFs often have few colors and low resolution, start with the largest version of the GIF you can find.

Why does my GIF look blurry as a wallpaper?

Many GIFs are only a few hundred pixels wide, while an iPhone lock screen is more than 1,000 pixels wide. Look for a higher-resolution version, or the original video the GIF was made from.

My GIF is shorter than 1 second. Will it work?

It will convert, but a very short Live Photo barely moves. If the GIF is a quick loop, the original video is usually a better source.

Does a GIF Live Photo have sound?

No. GIFs don’t contain audio, so the Live Photo will be silent.

Can I just save a GIF to Photos and use it as wallpaper?

A GIF saved to Photos stays a GIF. iOS won’t animate it on the lock screen; only Live Photos move there.
